FEA – Forestry and Environmental Action presented the first interactive map of susceptibility to forest fires in Bosnia and Herzegovina, created within the project “Joint Action to Reduce Increased Risk of Forest Fires to Nature and People in the Context of Climate Change in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
Representatives of institutions, administrations, and public forestry companies attended the event in Banja Luka, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in reducing the risk of fires in the context of climate change. The first interactive map of susceptibility to fires represents a step forward towards more effective forest fire management in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as strengthening resilience to climate challenges in the future. The interactive map of susceptibility to forest fires is available at the link.
“The process of creating the interactive GIS map involved intensive work on collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data on areas at risk of fires. Through this process, we managed to identify key risk factors and determine priority areas for preventive measures. It is important to emphasize that this map will benefit all relevant stakeholders – from decision-makers and institutions to the local community and citizens.
This map is the result of a joint effort of all stakeholders involved in the project and an indicator of how important it is to establish cooperation between the government sector and civil society to contribute to addressing this challenge. We believe that the use of this map will have a significant impact on increasing resilience to forest fires and reducing the damage they can cause.” – stated Lejla Hukić, project coordinator at the FEA.
The project “Joint Action to Reduce Increased Risk of Forest Fires to Nature and People in the Context of Climate Change in Bosnia and Herzegovina” is implemented by FEA – Forestry and Environmental Action within the SMART Balkans project, implemented by Centar za promociju civilnog društva – CPCD, together with partner organizations from Albania – Institute for Democracy and Mediation and North Macedonia – Center for Research and Policy Making, financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
